There is a famous quote by Tom Landry who says:
“A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you always knew you could be”
I resonate with it ever so deeply, as over the years I’ve deeply grown fond of my ambitions and willingness to realize the value within my deep inner self. Brought to fruition from inner thoughts to action and from action to result as a timeline of focus, planning and intense drive to achieve high end results. However, ones capacity is only limited by the barriers set by our own imaginations. Sometimes the need for external influence, thoughts, feedback and direction is pivotal to swerving a good idea into a great one and turning unpolished gems into exceptionally successful individuals.
I’ve never been shy of sharing an ambition or goal with someone who believes in my abilities. And I write this blog to share with you 2 stages in my life where being coached by an expert drastically improved and transformed my life and broadened my career focus expanding the borders which were once set in stone by the limits of my own imagination.
I never considered myself to be a writer, I was never blessed with good English grades nor did I read many books during my early years, yet I’m an author of 3 books which have sold worldwide and impacted over a million people. How you may ask? I scouted around online to find a coach who was passionate about writing and publishing, who knew the literary market and had a desire to support an ambitious but somewhat lost young mind. After exchanging emails we decided to meet and from there my journey transformed drastically.
She helped with me with content writing, formatting, structuring my book. Not only that, the persona and brand I had to build around it. Injecting confidence in me and my work, believing in my vision and showing me a pathway to getting published. Everything I needed to go from being ambitious yet unfocused individual with very limited knowledge of the publishing industry to becoming a published author a couple of months down the line. It was been one of my most invaluable experiences to date and cannot thank my coach enough.
Secondly, I’ve always been a shy person. Scared to take centre stage and be in the spotlight and had immense fear to address a small crowd let alone a large one. Yet, having published a book I needed to somehow promote this and share my message. But I wasn’t too sure how to get around doing this. I was fortunate enough to meet a wonderful individual at an event I attended who gave me his business card and told me to call him if I needed help with developing a career in speaking. Terrified as I was, it took me 2 weeks before I had the guts to call him. Spoke to him for 2 minutes, met him a week later. He then took me to 4 of his events. I watched him deliver his talks, his style and felt the passion in his words. His vocals and stage presence were immensely powerful. After each talk he’d sit down with me for 20 minutes to teach me something new about overcoming fear of public speaking. He gave me a task to write my own life journey highlighting what I felt was important to me and could add value to others. A key lesson i learnt from him was integrity and authenticity. I was able share with him my passion, my life journey and why I am on journey to make change and empower a young generation. I later realised, that I just needed confidence and direction to deeply believe in myself. That speaking on stage wasn’t about picturing everyone in their underwear to get away from stage fright but more about picturing myself stripped naked of all fear that my life’s magnet had connected and embedded with me. He gave me guidance, made me feel important which in return allowed me to believe in my abilities to wow a crowd. 10 years later I’ve travelled the world and inspired a 1 million people in audience size. Just goes to show anything is possible.
I couldn’t stress enough the value and importance in being coached and mentored. Not only to build your career platform but to develop your soft skills from communication to leadership, broadening mindset and career goals to learning how to overcome the fear of job interviews or even writing the most powerful CVs. Trust me i was coached and guided every step of the way throughout my journey and over the past 5 years I have coached hundreds of people just like you who need that bit of support to achieve their goals. Where ever I felt I needed guidance, clarity and direction i had the drive to ‘Invest in my potential’ and I feel it’s time you did too.
